My mother suggested I would enjoy Harry Turtledove, so when I was wandering an airport bookstore and came across In High Places, I bit. I finished this slim novel on the brief flight to Phoenix. This was a reasonable tale, though nothing special. Certainly an imaginative premise, though. I learned just now that the Crosstime Traffic [...]

I have no artistic talent, and no plans to start drawing or writing comics — even if I were to call them graphic novels. So, why did I just read Making Comics? This broad how-to about how to, yes, make comics caught my eye because the more I do in business, the more I realize [...]

As I started off into Vernor Vinge's A Deepness in the Sky I don't even know what I expected. Surely I'd read something by him before, or had an impression that here was a book worth keeping from my friend's giant box of giveaway books?

Managed to actually get up early enough to force coffee down my neck and head to the BSFA novel award taster reading panel … That’s the lovely Farah Mendlesohn, reading from James Morrow’s The Last Witchfinder; she also read from M. John Harrison’s Nova Swing in his absence. There’s Liz Williams, reading from her novel Darkland… Here’s Jon [...]

Jackie was totally surprised! She did notice someone carrying in a gift bag but as it was another coworkers birthday, she thought it was for them. We're so clever! She got a lot of nice gifts, from accessories and towels and some totally practical things like the mop I gave her. Actually she got two mop sort of things. Did you know that there's a mop thing out there especially for bathrooms??? Got a swivel head and a sort of triangular cleaning surface for going around tight corners. I shall have to see about this! LOLI left work an hour early to head into the City. Actually I came home and took a somewhat abbreviated soaky bath. I'm glad I got to leave early because I think if I had had to type one more page of medical stuff I would have cried. Being [...]

As I wrote here yesterday, I was the guest of the Kerry’s on Wednesday, for the taping of their interview on the Tavis Smiley Show which aired last night on KCET in Los Angeles. I took notes while the show was taping, but had been asked not to blog about the show until it aired. [...]

Or maybe they've already changed. Here is a quote from Efraim Karsh's book, ISLAMIC IMPERIALISM, A History. It's from the paperback edition, page 124, the middle of the third paragraph. In December 1856 British forces invaded Iran, and before the year was over they had captured the southern islands of kharg and Bushir and continued their advance northward. In early March 1857, the heavily fortified town of Muhammara fell after an hour's fighting, with thirteen thousand panic-stricken Iranians being pursued as they fled by fory-five British cavalrymen. Ahwaz was captured on April 1, and the following day Iran signed a peace treaty renouncing all its territorial claims to Afghanistan. I could comment on the British lack of diplomacy, but I won't. I could also [...]
